On Saturday 14th April I mentored at the Institute of Imagination (ioi) for a ‘Girls Only’ tech event.
The Institute of Imagination is a children Charity and it offers a new kind of space for the imagination to grow…It’s a world-class cultural destination in London that puts children at its heart….a creative space that encourages children & young people to invent, prototype & test ideas.
I thought the venue was fantastic, it had loads of space – tonnes of equipment & lots of techie sculptures dotted around the work space.
The event was organised by Coder Dojo London and I lead a Micro:bit workshop. The challenge was to build & code a two player reaction game. If you want to know more about the reaction game – you can read my previous blog here, where I’ve already described the ins & outs.
I think that the workshop went really well, I’d done a version of it before so I was quite confident.
All the girls worked quite independently – well done girls! I even got a chance to teach some grown-ups.
At the event, the girls also had the opportunity to participate in 3 other workshops: Scratch, Website design (HTML), and introduction to App design.
I was very pleased with the turnout (75 girls attended throughout the day) considering that it was the first sunny day we’ve had in London for a long time!
