CoderDojo Ham – Oct 2017

The Very Angry Halloween Monster

On the 14th of October 2017, I went to the CoderDojo Ham, a coding workshop for boys and Girls from 9 to 14!

I signed up for the BBC Micro:bit project called: The Very Angry Halloween Monster!

The objective was to make a monster that opens and closes its mouth! We were given the body of the monster made out of a milk carton. However, from there on, we had to make everything ourselves!
In order for us to know what we were supposed to do, we were given step by step instructions:

Step 1: To make a mouth for your monster

Step 2: To make a hole in the centre of the mouth

Step 3: To carefully put a thread through the hole

Step 4: To attach the mouth to the body

At this point my monster was looking great – with the help of  a mentor I  hot glued the motor to the body of the monster. I then had to attach a thread to connect the motor to the jaws; the motor would eventually open & close the jaws.

At this point I had created a monster with a jaw and a motor ready for action.

I could then move onto the really fun part which was to connect the micro:bit to the motor to program it.  Once I had finished attaching the micro:bit to the motor, I moved onto the coding. I used a special microbit application from the BBC micro:bit website for this.

The micro:bit was attached to my laptop using a cable – I started looking at my guide sheet and soon worked out how to get on with the coding.  The app that I was using to program my code was similar to scratch which I know how to use. Eventually, I successfully made the monster’s jaw to open and close.

The mentors really liked my work and so they took a video of me and my awesome monster!

For me, Micro:bit  has really been fun to work with.  I would definitely recommend it to you if you ever get the chance to try it out. I can’t wait until I get the opportunity to try some other things related to Micro:bit.

This Dojo has made me even more passionate about Micro:bit!

I have enjoyed all the Dojos I have been to and I can’t wait to do more of them!

It has been really fun writing about these Dojos and I am looking forward to doing it next time!
